Summer vacation is just around the corner. Not only does Kool Smiles care about your kids dental health, we also care about your kids overall health. Soon enough, the last school bell will ring, and kids all over the country will be out of school until the end of August. Here are some ways to ensure your kiddos have a happy and healthy summer break.
Slather on the Sunscreen: Did you know that too much sun during childhood can increase skin cancer risk in adulthood?1 If your children are going to be out in the sun for any extended amount of time, use a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or more. It should be put on half an hour before going outside, and reapplied every two hours. In addition to sunscreen, tell kids to play in the shade and give them hats to keep the sun off their faces.
Reach for the Water: Hot weather got you thirsty? Instead of stocking your fridge with soda or juice, tell your little ones to enjoy glass of crisp, refreshing ice water instead. Sugary drinks like soda, energy drinks and fruit juice cause cavities and are packed with calories. Water might seem a bit boring at first, but kids will quickly get used to it. In time, they’ll just reach for the water without even thinking about it.
Limit Screen Time: There’s nothing wrong with enjoying some video games or television. But too much screen time can hurt your child’s ability to focus and have healthy social development. Limit screen time to a set amount every day. When their screen time is up, your child can spend time doing crafts, playing outside or having fun with friends.
Stay Active: Long, lazy days are ahead, but don’t let your kiddos sink too far into those couch cushions. Kids and adults need regular exercise to stay healthy and feel happy. Do something active with your child every day, whether it’s going swimming at the pool, taking a bike ride or simply walking the dog around the neighborhood.
