Q&A Dental Insurance

How do I find out if I or my child qualifies for Medicaid dental coverage?

To find out if you or your child qualifies for Medicaid, you can do one of two things:

  1. Visit your state’s Medicaid website by going here and choosing your state from the menu at the bottom of the page.

  2. Apply for health care on the government’s Health Insurance Marketplace website. After you fill out the application, you will be told if your child qualifies for Medicaid or CHIP (government insurance for children whose families who make too much to qualify for Medicaid, but not enough to afford private insurance).

Keep in mind though that states are required to cover all dental services for children in low-income families, but are not required to cover adults, except for emergency dental care. Only half of the states provide dental services for adults beyond emergency care.

I want a hassle free dental insurance with no paperwork, no deductibles, no waiting times, and no yearly maximum amounts. Does this exist?

Yes it does. It’s called a Discount Plan. You pay a monthly or yearly fee, which gets you dental services at a discounted, fixed rate. Discount Plans are technically not insurance. It’s similar to buying a membership at a discount warehouse where you pay a yearly fee and get discounts on all the products. Be aware that you may have to pay more for each service than with with a PPO or DHMO plan.
