This Summer, Don’t Take a Break from Dental Health!

As you enjoy the summer and all the sun, fun and sweet treats that go along with it remember that it is important not to take a break from dental health!

Rosa Sanchez, one of your Community SmileMakers in Texas, was recently invited by KVER-FM in El Paso to share some on-air tips for keeping teeth healthy this summer.

Here are some of the tips Rosa shared:

  • Plan a new routine for a new schedule. Schedules tend to change in the summer with kids no longer waking up early for school.  Help kids set a routine for the summer that includes brushing their teeth after breakfast.
  • Watch the soda intake. Hot summer months, vacations, and trips to the pool often lead to more sweet drinks and junk food, which are bad for teeth.  Encourage ice water with a lemon slice or even an orange slice for a natural sweetener.
  • Practice the 3-2-1 rule: Eat 3 healthy meals, brush 2 times, and floss 1 time every day.
  • And most importantly, get your dental checkup! Summer is a great time to get your six-month dental checkup.  It is important to take advantage of this time when your child won’t have to miss school to get that necessary checkup.
